Friendship and Thank You Songs
Bill Withers, Carole King and Bruno Mars for a best friend, quieter songs for a hard week, a thank you classic, and what to write alongside it.
- For a hard time, choose a song about being there rather than a song about the problem.
- A thank you song works best with one sentence about what they did.
- Upbeat songs suit birthdays; slower songs suit apologies and hard times.
- A personalized song can name the friend and your inside jokes, from $9.
The best friendship songs are about showing up, which is what good friends do. The right one to send depends on the moment: a birthday, a hard week, or a thank you you never quite said. If you and your friend already have a song, send that. If not, here are the ones people come back to.
I write for Ditty City, where we make personalized songs, so I will say where ours fits at the end. The lists come first.
Songs for a best friend
- "Count on Me," Bruno Mars (2010). Simple, sunny and easy to sing along to. A good birthday pick.
- "You've Got a Friend," Carole King (1971). A promise to be there, from one of the great songwriters.
- "With a Little Help from My Friends," The Beatles (1967). Fun and warm, for a friend who has helped you through.
- "I'll Be There for You," The Rembrandts (1995). The theme from Friends, best for a friend who quotes it.
- "You've Got a Friend in Me," Randy Newman (1995). From Toy Story. Playful, and good for a lifelong friend from childhood.
Our best friend birthday song guide has ideas for the note that goes with it.
Songs for a friend going through a hard time
- "Lean on Me," Bill Withers (1972). The plainest offer of help ever recorded.
- "Bridge over Troubled Water," Simon & Garfunkel (1970). Slow and generous, for a really hard season.
- "Stand by Me," Ben E. King (1961). Steady and calm, a quiet way of saying you are not going anywhere.
- "That's What Friends Are For," Dionne Warwick and Friends (1985). Recorded to raise money for AIDS research, and still a song about being there.
Thank you songs
- "Thank You for Being a Friend," Andrew Gold (1978). Light and cheerful, and known to many as the theme from The Golden Girls.
For a teacher, a coach or a nurse, the song matters less than the note with it. Say one specific thing they did. The thank you song for a teacher guide has examples, and if the song is part of making up after a fight, the apology song guide covers that.
How to send it
Send the song with one sentence about why you picked it now. "Saw this and thought of you" is fine. "This was on repeat the whole drive to the coast" is better. For a hard time, do not ask them to reply; just let them know you are there.
When no existing song fits
Every song above was written about someone else's friend. It can say the feeling, but not the inside joke, the terrible apartment you shared, or the night the car broke down two hours from home.
That is the gap a personalized song fills. At Ditty City you answer a few questions about the person, we write and record a song with their name and your details in it, and you hear a free sample before you pay. A Quick Ditty is about 60 seconds for $9, a Little Ditty about 2 minutes for $29, and a Big Ditty about 4 minutes for $49, ending with a sign-off from you by name. It arrives inside a digital card, so it works for a birthday, a thank you or a just because. The friendship song guide covers what to include.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best song about friendship?
Common favorites include "Lean on Me" (Bill Withers, 1972), "You've Got a Friend" (Carole King, 1971), "Count on Me" (Bruno Mars, 2010) and "With a Little Help from My Friends" (The Beatles, 1967). The best one is the song you and your friend already share.
What song can I send a friend going through a hard time?
"Bridge over Troubled Water" (Simon & Garfunkel, 1970), "Stand by Me" (Ben E. King, 1961) and "That's What Friends Are For" (Dionne Warwick and Friends, 1985) all say you are there without dwelling on the problem.
What is a good thank you song?
"Thank You for Being a Friend" (Andrew Gold, 1978) is the classic. For a teacher, coach or nurse, a song paired with a short note about what they did for you means more than the song alone.

Yes. A personalized song uses their name and your shared stories. At Ditty City you hear a free sample before you pay, from $9 to $49 depending on length.
