Anniversary Songs for Couples
Tony! Toni! Toné!, Shania Twain and Alan Jackson for long marriages, lighter picks for the first few years, and how to find the song from your parents' wedding year.
- For a parents' milestone, the song from the year they married usually beats anything new.
- Your wedding song is always a fair choice, and it carries more than any new one.
- Send it with a memory from the year you are celebrating.
- A personalized song can put both names and your real story in it, from $9.
The best anniversary song depends on how long you have been together. A first anniversary suits something light and a little giddy. A 25th or a 50th suits a song about the years themselves. And your own wedding song is always a fair choice, because it carries more than any new one could.
I write for Ditty City, where we make personalized songs, so I will say where ours fits near the end. The lists come first.
Classic anniversary songs
- "Anniversary," Tony! Toni! Toné! (1993). The R&B anniversary song, slow and celebratory.
- "Endless Love," Diana Ross and Lionel Richie (1981). The big duet. Best for a couple who will happily sing along.
- "You're Still the One," Shania Twain (1998). About proving everyone wrong and still being together.
- "Remember When," Alan Jackson (2003). A walk through a whole marriage, from the first apartment to the grandkids.
- "Forever and Ever, Amen," Randy Travis (1987). A promise that holds up after decades, sung with a smile.
Songs for newer couples
- "Die a Happy Man," Thomas Rhett (2015). Gentle and devoted, good for the first few years.
- "Amazed," Lonestar (1999). About still being surprised by someone.
- **"Grow Old with You," Adam Sandler, from The Wedding Singer (1998).** Short, funny and very sweet. Works best for a couple who share a sense of humor.
Our first anniversary song guide covers that year in particular, and there is a separate anniversary song for your wife guide.
Songs for your parents' anniversary
For a parents' milestone, the best song is usually one from the year they married. Ask a relative what was played at the wedding, or look up the chart from that year.
After that, songs about a long life together work well: "Remember When" and "Forever and Ever, Amen" above, or "Endless Love" for a couple who married in the early 1980s. For the big ones, the 25th anniversary song and song for your parents' 50th anniversary guides cover toasts, slideshows and surprises.
How to give it
Send the song with one memory from the year you are celebrating. "Happy anniversary" with a link is fine. "This was playing the night we found the apartment with the broken heater" is a gift. If you are playing it at a party, play it once with everyone listening, not as background music.
When no existing song fits
Every song above was written about another couple. It can match the mood, but it cannot know about the road trip, the first apartment or the dog you adopted together.
That is the gap a personalized song fills. At Ditty City you answer a few questions about the person, we write and record a song with their name and your details in it, and you hear a free sample before you pay. A Quick Ditty is about 60 seconds for $9, a Little Ditty about 2 minutes for $29, and a Big Ditty about 4 minutes for $49, ending with a sign-off from you by name. It arrives inside a digital anniversary card that you can send ahead or schedule for the day.
