First Valentine's Day Together: How Much Is Too Much
The calibration problem on a first valentines day together, how to have the thirty second conversation that solves it, and what to do at each stage.
- Ask a week out whether you are both doing something. Thirty seconds of awkwardness beats one of you overshooting on the night.
- Ask a week out. Are we doing Valentine's, I just do not want one of us to go big and the other to not. That sentence sets the ceiling, and you can still surprise them inside it.
- Calibrate to how long it has been. Under two months is a card, something small and dinner. Six months to a year can carry a night away without being strange.
- Buy for the person, not for the date. Something they mentioned once and did not buy for themselves beats anything off a shelf labeled for her or for him, at any price.
Your first Valentine's Day together is the only one where you are guessing. Every one after this has a precedent: you know what they did last year, you know whether flowers landed or sat in a vase being ignored. The first has none of that, so people solve it by spending more than they meant to, which is the wrong direction. There is more on this in anti Valentine's day ideas. We wrote long-distance Valentine's day for Valentine's Day on its own.
The failure mode here is almost never doing too little.
Why overshooting is the common error
A gift that is warmer than the relationship puts the other person in an awkward position. They have to respond to it, in the moment, with their face. If they bought a card and you booked a hotel, they spend the evening apologizing for something they did nothing wrong about, and you spend it insisting that it is fine.
That is the actual risk. Not that they will think you are cheap. That a mismatch makes both of you perform.
Have the conversation, it takes thirty seconds
This is the highest value thing on this page and hardly anybody does it, because raising it feels like ruining the surprise. It does not. It sets a ceiling, and inside the ceiling you can still surprise them.
Say a version of this, about a week out.
Are we doing Valentine's? I am happy either way, I just do not want one of us to go big and the other to not.
You will get one of three answers and all three are useful.
- Let's keep it small. Believe them. Small is not nothing. It is one thoughtful thing and dinner.
- I love Valentine's. Also believe them. This person wants the day marked properly and will notice if it is not.
- I don't really do it. Ask one follow up: is that indifference or dislike? Those need opposite plans.
Calibrate to how long it has been
Roughly, and adjust for how fast your particular thing has moved.
Under two months. A card, something small and specific, dinner somewhere you have already been and liked. Nothing that needs a deposit. The goal is a good evening, not a statement.
Two to six months. A card that says something real, a gift in the $20 to $50 range that proves you listen, and a plan you made rather than one you picked off a list. This is the bracket where specificity does all the work.
Six months to a year. You can go bigger without it reading as strange. A night away is inside normal range now. So is a gift that took planning.
The bracket matters less than the honesty of it. A cheap gift that is exactly right beats an expensive one that could have been for anyone.
What to actually give
Buy for the person, not the date. The Valentine's aisle is a category, and category gifts are generic by definition.
Our guides to Valentine's gifts for her and Valentine's gifts for him work through this properly. The short version: pick the thing they mentioned once and did not buy for themselves. That is the gift, and it works at any price.
The card matters more than the gift and costs less, which is a trade nobody takes. What to write in a Valentine's card covers the wording, and the rule in a new relationship is to aim slightly under and be specific.
What to actually do
If it lands on a weekday, do not fight it. A Tuesday is a Tuesday. Move the main event to the weekend and keep the fourteenth small: a card in the morning, dinner at home, done.
If you are eating out, book early or do not bother. Restaurants on the fourteenth run set menus at a markup and turn tables twice, so a rushed table at a premium is worse than a good evening at home. Cheap date night ideas at home has six formats that beat most restaurants on that night.
The things that go wrong
- Jewelry too early. It reads as a bigger statement than most people intend and it is hard to walk back.
- A surprise trip. A surprise that needs somebody to clear a whole weekend is not a surprise, it is logistics you did alone.
- Anything with the word forever printed on it at eight weeks.
- Panic matching. If you find out on the twelfth that they bought you something, get a card and something decent to drink. Do not try to match a number you are guessing at.
- Treating it as a test. A first Valentine's is not information about the relationship. It is one evening in February.
If you get the calibration wrong anyway
Name it, lightly, on the night. I think I overdid this is a sentence that fixes the whole evening in about four seconds. The awkwardness only survives while nobody says it out loud.
Marking it properly without overspending
What makes a first Valentine's land is small and recent: how you met, the phrase they keep saying, the running joke that is only six weeks old. That is also the raw material for a song written about them, which sits in the right register for a new relationship because it is obviously personal without being a commitment.
A custom Valentine's love song goes into what to put in one, and for every other occasion our celebration ideas hub has the same problem solved for birthdays, anniversaries and the rest.
Frequently asked questions
How much should you spend on a first Valentine's Day together?
Less than you are tempted to. Under two months, keep it small and specific. Two to six months, roughly $20 to $50 on something that proves you listen. The number matters far less than whether the gift could have been for anyone.
Is a first Valentine's Day too soon for a big gift?
Usually, yes. A gift warmer than the relationship makes the other person feel they have to match it, and the evening turns into two people managing an imbalance rather than enjoying it.
What should you do if you have only been dating a few weeks?
A card, one small specific thing, and dinner somewhere you have already been and liked. Nothing that requires a deposit or a cleared weekend. Acknowledging that a Valentine's card is a lot for six weeks is charming and takes the pressure off.
Should you talk about Valentine's plans in advance?
Yes, and it does not ruin the surprise. Ask a week out whether you are doing it, and say you do not want one of you to go big and the other not to. That sets a ceiling you can still surprise them inside.
What if one of you does nothing at all?
Say it lightly on the night rather than storing it. One missed February is not information about the relationship, and it is far more often a misread of the signals than a lack of interest.
