Does a song need an occasion?
No, and the ones sent for no reason tend to land hardest, there is no obligation behind them, so the only explanation is that you meant it.
Who sends these?
Mostly people thanking a friend who will not accept being thanked, and partners who have run out of ordinary gifts. It works for anyone you would struggle to explain in a card.
What do I say when there is no reason?
Say why them and why now. "I was thinking about the summer we shared a flat" is a reason. The absence of an occasion is what gives it force, so there is no need to invent one.
Will it seem like something is wrong?
